Did you know languages develop unique vocabularies around what matters most to their speakers?

🐎 Mongolian has over a dozen words for horses
🌿 Māori has countless terms for ferns
🍡 Japanese has precise words for tastes like umami

Our new study of 616 languages found:

❄️ Inuit languages DO have exceptional snow vocabulary

  • apingaut = first snowfall

  • kikalukpok = crunching snow footsteps

☔ Surprise! Rain words flourish in drier climates

  • East Taa's |qΓ‘ba = rain-summoning ritual

🍺 Predictable but fun:

  • German → beer words

  • Fijian → fish terms

Explore our interactive tool to discover which languages have the richest vocabularies for:

  • Love (Hindi leads!)

  • Ghosts

  • Smells (Marshallese describes blood scent as meļļā)
